Multiplayer
Ratatan multiplayer guide: how room codes and platform invites work, which platforms cross-play, console subscription requirements and how co-op changes progression.
Introduction
Ratatan is fully playable solo offline, and the campaign is balanced so a single player can finish all four episodes. Multiplayer is the optional multiplier on top: up to four players team up online, sharing a run and its rewards while each player's progress saves to their own file. Getting a group together is deliberately low friction. You open the multiplayer menu, choose friend matchmaking and share a room code, or on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S you can skip the code entirely and use the platform's own invitation feature. Cross-play covers PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, with PlayStation 5 cross-platform support planned for the near future. Console online play needs Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer.

Core Mechanics
Multiplayer changes the rhythm of a run in two concrete ways. First, Welcome Mode is disabled during co-op, so a group that has been leaning on the softened early stages loses that safety net the moment a second player joins. Second, there is no local split-screen option on a single system, so teams of up to four have to play online. Progress still saves to each player's own save file, which means nobody has to host permanently and no one gets locked out of their own campaign. The practical consequence is that a group should coordinate on upgrades rather than assuming one player's account carries the team: Ratatan Dock and Support Desk upgrades are per-account, and stronger weapon loadouts on every player make the difference in later episodes. Because FEVER MODE rewards the whole party staying on beat, co-op also raises the value of any effect that steadies tempo.
Advantages
Co-op is the friendliest way to learn Ratatan, because four players on the same beat make the rhythm window feel generous and the shared run doubles the number of command windows landing correctly. It is also the cheapest way to clear content you are under-geared for, since a group can cover each other's missing sustain while slower accounts catch up on upgrades. Progress saving to each player's own file removes the usual co-op anxiety about hosting: nobody has to be online for you to continue the story, and no one risks losing their campaign because a host dropped. Cross-play across Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S means a mixed-platform friend group can actually play together rather than picking a single platform to standardise on.
Challenges
The biggest limitation is that Welcome Mode is unavailable in co-op, so groups cannot soften the early stages the way a solo player can. Play is online-only for more than one player, because there is no local split-screen, which rules out couch co-op entirely. Console players face a subscription wall that PC players do not, and PlayStation 5 owners cannot yet cross-play with the other platforms. Coordination also has a cost: because upgrade tracks are per-account, a group that usually plays together can still hit an episode gate where one member's dock is under-developed, and the run stalls for everyone. Finally, group tempo cuts both ways, since a player drifting off beat drags the party out of FEVER MODE with them.

Quick Tips
Fund your own Dock before a group push. Because upgrades are per-account and progress saves to each player's file, a teammate's stronger loadout will not carry your account through an episode gate. Bank tokens into adventure upgrades before you agree on a session that pushes a new episode. Agree on which episode the group is pushing before the session starts, so nobody spends tokens blind on a wall they cannot clear.
Assign roles around the beat. Co-op rewards the whole party staying on beat, so agreeing who covers sustain, who holds the front and who chases targets keeps FEVER MODE alive longer. A group that drifts out of tempo together loses more than the sum of four individual mistakes. A group that calls its retreats together keeps the Elemental Force uptime and the FEVER state alive noticeably longer than four solo players.
Plan for Welcome Mode being off. The softened early stages disappear the moment a second player joins, so groups should not learn the game in co-op and then expect the same difficulty solo. Run a solo stage first to learn the pattern, then bring the group in for the clear.
